Practicum description: As breastfeeding advocates, we talk about what makes a healthy baby and healthy mama, and the importance of breastfeeding, but rarely do we educate how the chemicals that are in our food can potentially affect breastmilk. It is well-documented that certain environmental chemicals end up in breast milk, and nursing babies are unnecessarily exposed. Our food system is characterized by large-scale mechanized production of single crops, and highly dependent on fossil fuels and the widespread use of chemicals, including pesticides, heavy metals, and other environmental chemicals.
