LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has partnered with the Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Association (BMBFA) to promote the positive impacts breastfeeding has on infant and mother health and reducing infant mortality rates as part of Black Breastfeeding Week, Aug. 25-31.
The collaboration is part of MDHHS’ continued efforts to eliminate health disparities among Michigan’s diverse population. In recognition of the week, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has also issued an official proclamation.
Breastfeeding provides countless benefits to infants including easy digestion, production of antibodies and reduced risk of infections and childhood obesity. It also helps nursing mothers with faster recovery from birth, saving money and reduced risk for postpartum hemorrhage and uterine cancer.
MDHHS and BMBFA will host and participate in events throughout the week that promote breastfeeding, including:
- Screening of Chocolate Milk: The Documentary on Aug. 27 from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at the Library of Michigan in Lansing. Additional screenings are being held in Battle Creek, East Lansing, Detroit, Flint and Kalamazoo.
- Twitter chat hosted by @MomsRising on Aug. 28 at 1 p.m.
- Black Mothers Breastfeeding Club on Aug. 28 at the McKenny Center in Detroit.
