General Purpose
The Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Association’s community-based doula will provide birth support, encouragement and information to mothers through pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period.

Essential Job Performance Objectives
- Provide prenatal, childbirth and postpartum support, care and education to 25 families annually
- Input data into data system
- Lead and actively participate in Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Club
- Attend and actively participate in community outreach activities
- Conduct training/classes/informational sessions related to breastfeeding, childbirth and parenting
Duties/Scope of Practice
- Conduct participant visits in homes, public settings, virtually and provider’s office
- Assess participant’s confidence/needs for birth and provide basic assistance
- Provides basic prenatal, postpartum, labor and early parenting education and encouragement
- Maintains and understands the doula scope of practice
- Respects each participant by keeping information strictly confidential
- Reports any concerns that are beyond the doula scope of practice to administration
- Keeps accurate records for all contacts and submits them in a timely manner
- Provides approved resources to participant
- Schedules appointments with the participant
- Maintains knowledge and skills about birth through ongoing learning opportunities such as workshops, monthly staff meetings, and independent training.
- Participate in all required BMBFA events & activities
- Actively recruit new participants into the program
- All other duties as assigned by administration
Lived Experience (preferred)
- Breastfeeding / breast pumping experience
- Intimate connection to the Detroit community
Requirements
- Successfully completion of HealthConnect One’s (HCO) Community-based Doula Training or similar certification. If the applicant holds a doula certificate different from HCO, BMBFA will provide HCO doula training during employment.
- High school diploma or GED within 12 months of being employed
- Available for on-call and full-time work
- Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license & proof of current car insurance & registration

- $44,000 (entry level)
