Application Instructions: BMBFA will hire 1 full-time Program Director or 2 part-time Co-Program Directors to work collaboratively. Apply for either Program Director or Co-Director. Do not apply for both.

General Purpose

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Program Director will advance the mission, goals and services of BMBFA by providing administrative, operational and programmatic oversight of all aspects of Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Association’s (BMBFA) programs including planning, organizing, staffing, and evaluating program activities.

Job Summary

Plan the program

  • Plan the overall delivery of programs and their activities in accordance with the mission and the goals of BMBFA.  Programs include; direct service, training and education, advocacy and maternal-child-health innovation 
  • Develop and implement short and long-term goals and objectives to achieve the successful program outcomes
  • Develop funding proposals for programs to ensure the continuous delivery of services
  • Develop program budgets 

Organize the program

  • Ensure that program activities operate within the culture, policies and procedures of the organization
  • Ensure that program activities comply with all relevant legislation and professional/ethical standards as well as grant requirements
  • Properly document program activities and progress
  • Oversee the collection and maintenance of records on the programs and participants of the program according to the confidentiality/privacy policy of the organization

Staff the program

  • In consultation with the Executive Director, recruit, interview and select well-qualified program staff 
  • Supervise all program staff by providing direction, input and feedback in accordance with organizational culture, policies, procedures and practices 
  • Perform staff evaluations
  • Establish volunteer management practices
  • Engage volunteers for appropriate program activities 

Lead the program

  • Ensure all staff members receive orientation and appropriate training in accordance with organizational standards
  • Communicate with participants and other stakeholders to gain and maintain community support for programs and to solicit input to improve programs 
  • Liaise with other staff to ensure the effective and efficient program delivery
  • Coordinate the delivery of services among different program activities to increase effectiveness and efficiency

Evaluate the program

  • Write program reports 
  • Communicate with funders as outlined in funding agreements
  • Ensure that programs operate within the approved budget
  • Identify and evaluate the risks associated with program activities and take appropriate action to control the risks
  • Develop a program evaluation framework to assess the strengths of the program and to identify areas for improvement
  • Monitor program activities on a regular basis and conduct a regular evaluations 
  • Report evaluation findings to the Executive Director and recommend changes to enhance programs, as appropriate

Secondary Duties

Lived Experience (preferred)

  • Breastfeeding / breast pumping experience 
  • Intimate connection to the Detroit community

 

Education and Experience

  • Minimum M.A. in related field (advocacy and social justice, community organizing and advocacy, public health, African American/women studies, social work, anthropology, public administration, public policy, healthcare administration, non-profit management, or similar) 
  • 5+ years experience in the maternal-child-health field; preferred emphasis on breastfeeding
  • Demonstrated director or management experience
  • Strong and deep understanding of the principles of racial equity/justice
  • Strong and deep understanding of community-centered approach
  • Knowledge of Medicaid policies, procedures and standards
  • Demonstrated successful grant writing experience 
  • Demonstrated experience building programs or operational processes
  • Experience supervising staff

Director (full-time)

Compensation

  • $70,000-75,000 annual salary (commensurate with education and experience)
