General Purpose

The Program Manager for Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Association (BMBFA) provides administrative, operational and programmatic oversight to BMBFA’s community-based programs. 


Black Mothers Breastfeeding Association is a non-profit 501(c)3 community-based organization with strong ties to the Detroit community.  BMBFA’s mission is to reduce racial inequities in breastfeeding support for Black families.  BMBFA optimizes the first food experience through direct service, training, advocacy and MCH Innovation.

Job Summary

  • Work collaboratively with co-program manager
  • Manage the community-based doula program, Black Mothers Breastfeeding Club?, community breastfeeding education/peer support and state/local community-based activities
  • Supervise community-based staff
  • Significantly contribute to the writing team for grants, briefs and reports
  • Utilize tools or design systems and processes to track data and monitor progress; and create regular reports for programs
  • Lead, facilitate and collaborate with cross-functional teams in planning and execution of programs 
  • Serve as a member of field-related advisory and/or ad-hoc committees; or similar
  • Coordinate focus groups, community conversations and listening sessions
  • Build and sustain meaningful relationships with key stakeholders and community partners
  • Sustain and contribute to a consistent communication’s plan (thought leadership, content calendar, traditional/social media, web calendar, mass text, etc.)
  • Attend educational workshops, conferences and trainings for professional development and career growth
  • Other related duties as assigned by administration

Lived Experience (preferred)

  • Breastfeeding / breast pumping experience  
  • Intimate connection to the Detroit community

Education and Experience

  • Minimum B.A. in related field (advocacy and social justice, community organizing and advocacy, public health, African American/women studies, social work, anthropology, public administration, public policy, healthcare administration, non-profit management, or similar) 
  • 2-5 years experience in a related field 
  • Program management, coordination or equivalent 
  • Deep understanding of the principles of racial equity/justice
  • Deep understanding of community-centered approach
  • Knowledge of Medicaid policies, procedures and standards
  • Grant writing experience; foundation and/or government
  • Experience supervising staff, preferred
